Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to contest specific calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
